What the inspector found

One grade is one visit. A run of them tells you whether it has been good for years or has only just got there.

Ofsted has looked into a concern about this setting. That means something was raised and Ofsted acted on it. It does not by itself say what was found — the document does.

What it is like to attend

Children enter the setting confident, eager and ready to learn. They have high levels of independence and quickly settle into the familiar routines. The curriculum is ambitious and challenging for children. Staff know the children well and have a good grasp of how best to support them and build on their knowledge and skills.

Staff recognise the importance of allowing children time to practise and hone their skills and apply their learning in different ways. This helps to ensure knowledge is embedded and allows children to grow in confidence.

Staff listen well to the children and take account of what interests them. Children enjoy learning about what changes occur as we move into autumn. They delight in exploring their environment and observing as the leaves change in colour and fall from the trees. They learn new words and their meaning, such as 'nocturnal' when learning more about hedgehogs. They use language well for description as they refer to the fallen leaves as 'scrunchy' and 'crunchy' in texture.

What Ofsted told them to improve

To further improve the quality of the early years provision, the provider should:

- continue to develop the evaluations of teaching practice to consistently identify areas for improvement, further building on the high-quality provision provided - ensure a consistent approach to partnership working with other settings children attend in order to gain a full picture of the child's learning journey and all-round development.

What to ask them

Some of this is above, from the setting or from parents, and it can go out of date. The rest is in no dataset anywhere. Either way it is worth ten minutes on the phone.

  • Is £7.56 a session still the rate? What is on top: meals, nappies, late pick-up, and what happens if you are late.
  • How do you apply my funded hours? Whether they stretch them over the year, and the minimum days you have to book.
  • Do you have a place for a child of my age now? Baby rooms fill first and waiting lists are common.
  • Who would my child's key person be? And how long have the staff been there. No dataset holds this and it matters more than anything above.
  • Can I visit at a busy time? Mid-morning on a weekday tells you far more than an empty room after hours.
