What it is like to attend
Children are greeted warmly by the caring staff in this nursery. They are happy and engage quickly in the exciting activities and toys that have been planned for them to enjoy. For example, children develop fine motor skills as they make marks and create patterns in flour. They develop their understanding of simple mathematical concepts as they build with bricks and talk about the size and shapes of different stones. Staff provide regular opportunities for children to develop their physical skills. Children enjoy the time they spend in the outdoor area, where they negotiate their way around obstacles on bikes and scooters. Staff have high expectations for children's behaviour. Children respectfully follow familiar routines and the nursery's golden rules, such as helping to tidy away toys.
Babies smile and chuckle as they shake musical instruments and play peekaboo with the attentive staff. Staff support early language development well. They share books with babies, modelling and repeating the sounds made by animals in pictures. Staff smile and clap in celebration as babies successfully repeat the animal sounds they hear. Staff interact effectively with children as they play alongside them in imaginary play. For instance, when scooping sand into containers to make pretend ice cream, staff engage children in discussions about their favourite toppings and flavours. Children describe their choices as they pretend to add chocolate sauce and sprinkles to their flavoured ice cream.
What Ofsted told them to improve
To further improve the quality of the early years provision, the provider should:
- consistently focus the planning and teaching of adult-led activities on what children need to learn next to make the best possible progress n enhance the strategies used by staff to allow children sufficient time to respond to questions to fully extend their learning n strengthen the transition process for children moving across sites so staff gain a better understanding of children's individual needs to help them settle.

What to ask them

- What does it cost, all in? What is on top: meals, nappies, late pick-up, and what happens if you are late.
- Can I use my funded hours here? Whether they stretch them over the year, and the minimum days you have to book.
- Is there a place for my child's age? Baby rooms fill first and waiting lists are common.
- Who would my child's key person be? And how long have the staff been there. No dataset holds this and it matters more than anything above.
- Can I visit at a busy time? Mid-morning on a weekday tells you far more than an empty room after hours.
