Funded hours
All three and four year-olds are eligible for free childcare and early learning from the school term after their third birthday. Children can have up to 570 hours in each 12 month period from the term they become eligible until they reach compulsory school age – the term following their fifth birthday. Increased entitlement may be available to some families. From September 2025 some children may b.
Worth knowing. If a family is eligible for and receiving government funding, funding will continue for a maximum of 4 consecutive weeks while a child is absent from Nursery. If the absence lasts longer than 4 continuous weeks, government funding will stop from week 5 and will not resume until the child returns to Nursery. During this period, full nursery fees will apply for each day of absence after the first 4 weeks.

What to ask them

- How do you apply my funded hours? Whether they stretch them over the year, and the minimum days you have to book.

- Who would my child's key person be? And how long have the staff been there. No dataset holds this and it matters more than anything above.
- Can I visit at a busy time? Mid-morning on a weekday tells you far more than an empty room after hours.
